Root canals

Many people think that a root canal procedure is painful, but it is actually the discomfort leading up to it that causes the pain. The root canal procedure is typically not any more painful than having a filling placed. A root canal is done to save a tooth that has extensive decay or has an infection.

Dr. Gunderson will treat bicuspid and anterior teeth if they are in need of a root canal. He will typically refer his patients who need a root canal on one of their molar teeth to a specialist called an endodontist. The reason for this is that the molar teeth can have multiple canals and the specialist has special equipment for the most optimal result.

The following are some of the reasons teeth need to be extracted:

  • Broken, cracked, or extensively decayed teeth to the point that the tooth cannot be restored
  • Advanced gum disease
  • Non-functioning teeth such as wisdom teeth

Dr. Gunderson makes every effort to maintain natural functioning teeth to prevent drifting and more of a financial expense to the patient.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Dr. Gunderson only uses the finest tooth-colored composite resin material when filling teeth. So whether you are replacing old silver fillings or placing a new filling due to decay rest assured that it will be done with a tooth-colored resin material. Tooth-colored fillings are a cosmetic dental procedure that restores the natural color and appearance of your teeth.

Crowns (Cap)

A dental crown is used to cover a tooth that is decayed, broken, has an extensive filling, or has had a root canal. A crown helps to support and protect the tooth. Dental crowns can be made using a variety of materials depending on the need. With today's modern technology all porcelain crowns are very life-like and can closely mimic a natural tooth. Dr. Gunderson uses only the finest dental laboratories to fabricate our crowns.

A dental bridge is permanently cemented in place to restore an area where a natural tooth is missing. As long as the space has teeth on either side of it, a bridge can be done. Whenever a tooth is removed within a short period of time a bridge or an implant should be done to prevent drifting of the other teeth.

Dentures/Partial Dentures

Dentures and partial dentures are used when a patient is missing some or all of their natural teeth. An alternative to having a removable denture would be to have implants placed and then restore the mouth with fixed bridges. Many denture patients choose to have a few implants placed with special clips fabricated into their dentures so they securely snap in place.
